A.I. Call Taker Will Begin Taking Over Police Nonemergency Phone Lines Next Week

The system, provided by Versaterm, will use artificial intelligence to determine if a caller needs to speak with an actual call taker. This initiative comes as the city attempts to address slowing call response times, with only 41% of 911 calls being picked up within 20 seconds. Additionally, there are plans to transfer nonemergency lines to 311 and route a third of emergency calls to alternative responders. However, these plans may require retraining and renegotiating contracts with first responders.
