A.I. Call Taker Will Begin Taking Over Police Nonemergency Phone Lines Next Week

Willamette Week, 06/17/23. A new artificial intelligence system called “Case Service Reporting” will be implemented in Portland to answer nonemergency calls starting next week. The system, provided by Versaterm, will use artificial intelligence to determine if a caller needs to speak with an actual call taker. This initiative comes as the city attempts to address slowing call response times, with only 41% of 911 calls being picked up within 20 seconds. Additionally, there are plans to transfer nonemergency lines to 311 and route a third of emergency calls to alternative responders. However, these plans may require retraining and renegotiating contracts with first responders. The implementation of these changes faces challenges, including staffing 311 around the clock and managing public expectations. READ THE ARTICLE

How restaurants such as Panera and Chipotle are dipping into A.I. to streamline food prep and ordering

CNBC, 06/17/23. Restaurant brands are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline food service operations, from drive-thrus to back-of-house tasks. While AI adoption is still in its early stages, it has the potential to automate tasks and improve the guest experience. Analysts believe that AI can also help address workforce challenges in the hiring market, and drive sales through suggestive selling. However, there are obstacles to overcome, such as language barriers and menu complexities. Several major chains have already begun piloting AI programs, with partnerships and acquisitions in this space. The goal is to enhance operations, improve efficiency, and create more meaningful interactions with customers. READ THE ARTICLE

  • How to Uncensor Any AI Large Language Model Like ChatGPT

Decrypt, 06/17/23. The latest update to the Oobabooga text generation web UI allows for unrestricted responses from any Large Language Model (LLM) of choice. By utilizing the “Start Reply With” feature, users can guide the LLM to generate uncensored and comprehensive responses. This method works for any model and eliminates censorship concerns. The ability to steer conversations with LLMs opens up new possibilities for interactive and free-flowing dialogues. As we embrace this era of unrestricted AI, it’s like teaching a parrot to talk, only to be lectured about Shakespearean nuance. READ THE ARTICLE

The opportunity of AI: How ChatGPT can revitalize US education

The Hill, 06/17/23. In a recent article in MIT Technology Review, it is argued that using ChatGPT to write summaries is a form of cheating. While it is true that many children struggle with reading and writing, the real story is more complex. Instead of seeing ChatGPT as the end of education, we can use it to reimagine success for children. We should encourage them to connect their knowledge and values, think deeply, and assess their unique thinking skills. Education should integrate heart and mind, fostering a genuine understanding of the world and oneself. By focusing on their intrinsic interests and needs, we can inspire children to engage with reading and learning. The goal should not be to make them robotic but to help them develop their full humanity and empathy. This requires a shift in our understanding of success, emphasizing ethics, empathy, and critical thinking. Assessment should prioritize quality conversations that support empathy and critical thinking, rather than relying solely on data-driven metrics. While ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in supporting learning, our children’s humanity depends on a broader reimagining of education. READ THE ARTICLE

People Are Using AI to Automate Responses to Site That Pays Them to Train AI

Yahoo News, 06/17/23. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform, launched in 2005, has provided opportunities for individuals to earn money by completing small tasks requiring human intelligence. However, researchers have found that a significant number of workers on Mechanical Turk are now utilizing language models to automate their labor. This shift is due to the advancements in AI technology, blurring the lines between humans and machines. Concerns arise as it becomes harder to distinguish between human-generated and AI-generated data, emphasizing the need for new measures to ensure the integrity of human data. READ THE ARTICLE
