Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics, Applied to AI

Psychology Today, 10/07/23. In light of the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics have become a crucial reference point. However, with the emergence of language model advancements like LLMs, it is necessary to revisit and recalibrate these guiding principles. Asimov’s laws, introduced in 1942, need to be adapted to the modern AI landscape. Instead of focusing on physical robots, we should prioritize human welfare and societal well-being. We must establish ethical guidelines for AI, while actively addressing and mitigating biases and discrimination. This ongoing journey aims to align AI with humanistic values and ensure a better future for humanity. READ THE ARTICLE

Does higher ed know what to do about AI?

The Miami Student, 10/07/23. The release of GPT-4 has revolutionized the way students interact with artificial intelligence, raising concerns about its ethical use. Professors at Miami University have varying views on the impact of AI tools like GPT-4 in academia. Despite the lack of consensus, Miami has made a revision to its academic integrity policy to include unauthorized use of AI tools as a form of cheating. This policy prompts important questions about the definition and authorized use of AI tools in the classroom. Students nationwide also have differing opinions on whether using AI on assignments is considered cheating. Miami University’s unclear AI academic integrity policy highlights the need for clearer guidelines. As a writing consultant, I acknowledge the apprehension towards AI’s influence on the art of writing. However, universities should seize the opportunity to teach students how to ethically and skillfully navigate the AI age. AI writing tools have numerous benefits but require critical thinking. Universities should lead the conversation on AI education and encourage ethical use by providing explicit permission and transparency, emphasizing the importance of fact-checking AI-generated responses, addressing bias and intellectual property concerns, and showcasing examples of how AI can assist in brainstorming. By educating and fostering informed discussions about AI, Miami University can lead the way in creating a positive future with AI, where it enhances life rather than evoking dystopian fears.
