Microsoft Researchers Propose A New AI Method That Uses Both Forward And Backward Language Models To Meet In The Middle And Improve The Training Data Efficiency

MARKTECHPOST, 03/18/23. Traditional pretraining of language models (LMs) has focused on perplexity in predicting the next token, ignoring information from following tokens. To improve data efficiency and consistency in LM use across domains, Microsoft researchers proposed the “Meet in the Middle” (MIM) paradigm.

MIM trains both forward and backward models, utilizing both prefix and suffix information. MIM outperforms multiple baselines in common evaluation criteria, making it a valuable tool for developing high-performing LMs. READ MORE
