Large language models like GPT-4 can reinforce social biases and prejudices. To ensure responsible and ethical development and deployment of AI systems, it is essential to establish ethical guidelines, create an independent regulatory body, require clear documentation, hold developers accountable for harm caused by their systems, institute content-moderation and privacy protections, and ensure accessibility and inclusivity.

Without such guardrails and oversight, the harms of AI are likely to multiply, and their benefits may become outweighed by their negative impacts. READ MORE

Report: Employers would gladly replace workers with AI technology

SiliconValley.com. 03/28/23. A significant number of jobs are at risk of being replaced thanks to the rise of AI technology. This is causing fear and concern among both employees and managers.  A majority of managers are willing to replace employees with AI tools if they produce comparable work. 

Customer service representatives and IT support technicians are among the most vulnerable. Over 321,900 jobs in California are at high risk of being replaced by AI technology. It is estimated that 15.7 million US jobs will be enhanced by AI but 19.4 million jobs will be cut in the process. 

AI technology can improve efficiency and output. But, we’ve got to consider its potential impact on the workforce and develop strategies to minimize job loss. READ MORE

REGULATION

The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, explained

The World Economic Forum, 03/28/23. The EU proposed the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act to regulate AI development and use. It’s focussed on data quality, transparency, oversight, and accountability. 

The framework includes a four-tier classification system based on risk level, prohibiting unacceptable systems, allowing low-risk systems with few requirements, and permitting high-risk systems with rigorous testing and documentation. 

The AI Act also establishes an AI Board and proposes steep penalties for non-compliance. The legislation is under discussion in the European Parliament. READ MORE
